「ゲームの英語」と言っても、“nerf”（※）といったような、ゲーム文化に固有の表現、あるいはそこからネットさらにはリアルへと波及していった表現などではなく、ここでは、英語でゲームをプレイしていて遭遇する、わりと普通の、しかし、ちょっとおもしろい英語表現、というのを想定している。 ゲームの場面を通じて、具体的な使われ方や表現の持つ感触について実感が増し、また同時に、その短いフレーズからゲームそのものについても洞察が深まるかもしれない、そんな英語表現を極私的にピックアップしてみたいのである。
ゲームは英語の勉強に使えるか？ 比較的使える、と私は考える。PCでゲームをする私は日本語訳の有無に関係なく英語で作られているゲームは英語でプレイしているが（学習目的というよりは、単なる趣味・好みからだが）、個人的な経験から言って、少なくとも映画や音楽からよりも多くの単語やフレーズをゲームを通して吸収してきた。もちろん、あらゆるジャンルのゲームに同じことを言えるわけではないが、場面に疑似的に居合わせることができ、ときには返答を求められるゲームならではの語彙の定着しやすさ、というものがある。その点も考えていきたい。
